introduces the major theoretical approaches to understanding mental illness
and highlights the principles, research methods, and treatment modalities
that are most relevant to each approach. With this purpose in mind, we shall
discuss some of the representative psychological disorders and consider their
symptoms, causes, and treatments. Two recurrent themes are that disorders
may be studied, understood, and treated from a variety of perspectives and
inquiry and treatment should be guided by scientific principles and findings.
The models covered are: behavioral, cognitive, evolutionary, neurobiological,
& psychodynamic.
