Biography

I am an associate professor of biology at Vassar College where I teach an introductory biology course titled The Biology of Pills, Potions and Poisons in addition to biochemistry and molecular biology. I am very active in the interdepartmental program in biochemistry. When I first came to the biology department my research interests were the molecular biology of ribosomal RNA.  In 1999 while on sabbatical I did research in Dr. Linda Breeden's Laboratory at The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington where I leaned to work with the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae.  In the past few years I started collaborating with a veterinary oncologist, Dr. Joseph Impellizeri, DVM, DACVI (oncology).  We have been measuring the levels of expression of the gene for cyclooxygenase-2 in a variety of canine tumors.  Most recently we have been studying COX-2 expression in hemangiosarcomas.  For several years I have been involved in writing biochemistry problems books for two biochemistry textbooks by R. Garrett and C. Grisham.  In addition, I have participated in a summer research program, Exploring Research for Community College Students funded by a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Grant to Vassar College.  I am the Radiation Safety Officer at Vassar College.

I play squash and try to keep fit through non-contact boxing. Locally, I volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Anche parlo un po di Italiano e ho gli amici a l'Universita' di Camerino.
