In order to produce mathematical expressions such as the one shown here, the pages on this site have to include a rather complex HTML structure. While most browser and platform combinations will be able to render this complexity fairly faithfully on-screen, some will produce a bit of a jumble when you send a page to the printer. After much trial and error, I have determined that the best browser for producing hard copy of these materials is the most recent version of Internet Explorer. Thus|

Netscape Navigator 4.7 will produce a tolerable printout on a Windows machine, but not on a Mac. Browsers based on the Mozilla 5 browser engine (Netscape 6, Netscape 7, and Mozilla 1.4) will not give adequate printout on either platform.

In producing hard copy, the main thing to keep in mind is that the page you want to print exists inside a frameset such as the one shown below.|
xxxxx
xxxxxx

The page you want to print is located in
this frame. Step 1 is to click the cursor
inside this frame so as to select it. Then
issue the Print command as you would for
any other print job. On a Mac, Internet
Explorer 5 and Netscape 4.7 will both auto-
matically print only the frame you have
selected. On a Windows platform, you will
need to click the option to print 'Only the
selected frame.'

If you are unable to produce adequate hard copy in this fashion, you can try printing from the PDF versions of the chapters. Note, however, that these PDF versions are now a couple of years old. The advantage of printing from the on-line (HTML) web versions is that these have been regularly corrected and updated.
