Structure In life, the body is integral to communication and living. These kinetic poetries necessitate the evoking of the bodily because it is a part of the reciprocation of information, a part of reading, a part of feeling something out of a poem, a part of putting something into the poem. And it is this reciprocation that is important. The skin is the surface layer, holding the inside in and the outside out, yet being the joining of the two, the communication between them.

In "Shifting Ground," a dance video project which juxtaposes dancers of different geographic countries and their "culturally inhabited dance and movement knowledge" (http://artists.banff.org/schiller/introductione.htm [Accessed 28 October 1999].), the project is introduced with the following assertion: "The skin, being porous, and permeable is the place of active exchange between the outer and inner world, the place of transference of sensation, and the place where our imagination and perception of the world are altered." (http://artists.banff.org/schiller/introductione.htm [Accessed 28 October 1999].)
