Michael J. Walsh, B.Soc.Sci. (Hons), University of Cape Town; M.A., & Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara, is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Religion, as well as an active member of the Asian Studies Program at Vassar College. He teaches courses on the history of Chinese religions, and method and theory in the study of religion. He is particularly interested in monastic life, colonialism and religion, the production of sacred space, and cultural geography. His book Sacred Economies: Buddhist Monasticism and Territoriality in Medieval China is published by Columbia University Press. He is currently working on two other book projects, one on religion, politics and modernity in China (The Politics of the Sacred), the other, Buddhist temple space.
