Mark A. Schlessman
Professor of Biology, Vassar College
Curator, Vassar College Herbarium

Ph.D. Botany, University of Washington
B.A. Biology, Colorado College

TEACHING
Courses that I usually teach include: Evolution of Biological Diversity (Biol 151), Plant Structure and Diversity (Biol 208), Evolutionary Biology (Biol 350), and Ethnobotany (AMCL 286). I'm especially interested in the development of laboratory investigations that use plants.

RESEARCH
I study plant sex. I'm especially interested in the evolution of gender strategies in the ginseng and parsley families (Araliaceae and Apicaceae).

EVERYTHING ELSE
When I'm not teaching, researching, or botanizing, I like to hang out with my sons John Roy (5) and Alan (2), play golf or see a good movie with my wife Laura, sing in my church choir, listen to Dire Straits or Nanci Griffith or Neil Young, or add and subtract from my wine cellar.
