Photos of Africa
This page contains links to a few photos that I have taken during my travels through Africa.
Rwandan Countryside
Even though Rwanda is located near the equator, it has a temperate climate because of its high altitude. The countryside is hilly and green, as in the photo above.
Market
The weekly market always draws a crowd. Here is a scene from the market in Gikongoro.
Sorghum Beer
In Rwanda, any cermony is accompanied by the sharing of food and drink. Here a group of people at a ceremony celebrating the institution of a reconciliation program at a Catholic parish share a pot of sorghum beer.
Basket Project
This is a basket project sponsored by the women's group of the Presbyterian Church in Kirinda, Rwanda. Small projects like this are a typical means women use to attempt to supplement their farm income.
Bible Study
Religious organizations have played an important part in contributing to the growth of civil society in much of Africa in recent decades. This photo of a weekly Bible study group near Butare, Rwanda, demonstrates the type of independent organization that churches have commonly created.
Massacre Site 1 Massacre Site 2 Massacre Site 3
Rwanda today is dotted with sites like this one, a school near Gikongoro in southwestern Rwanda, where thousands of Tutsi were slaughtered in 1994.
Anysie
This is a photo of my friend Anysie Uwimana standing in front of all that remains of the home where she grew up in Gikongoro Prefecture, Rwanda. Anysie and two distantly related young cousins are the only survivor of the genocide in their family of the 1994 genocide. The fields shown here once contained a series of buildings that housed her parents, several sisters and brothers, her grandparents, and an uncle and his family, but now it is all abandoned. Anysie, among the bravest people I know, has picked up the pieces and moved on with her life, first taking a job in Kigali, now studying in South Africa.
Woman and Bullet Holes
Life goes on in the midst of violence. Here a women sits in front of a wall at the gas station where she works in the town of Ruhengeri. Notice the pockmarks left in the wall by bullets.
Tim and Kids
Here's a picture of me trying to fit in. This is a photo of a group of children taken at Kinigi, at the foot of Mount Karisimbi in Ruhengeri, Rwanda.
Masai
A young man from the Masai group in Kenya watches over his cattle near Masai Mara park.
Elephant Zebra
Here are a few obligatory animal shots taken on safari in Kenya.
