a Classics major, Judy, from - - Baltimore,
the
city of Poe,
Mencken, the old Colts - - reborn as the Ravens, the only NFL team, it has been said, to be named after a poem - - and the Orioles. It was a blind date, but the rest, as they say, is History (part of which are two daughters,Victoria Josselyn and Gillian Cushing, who take their middle names from the Vassar dorms in which they were born when we were house fellows.)
Tony has now put up on the Web some of the remarkable work done by his students in a Senior Seminar: Studies in Victorian England: Prejudice and Policy, and if you wish to see their work, comprising their selection of two Punch cartoons to illustrate various of the course's themes, and their commentaries on them click here. Any criticisms or suggestions will be greatly appreciated and I know that my students would enjoy hearing from you personally.
No Wohl Home Page could possibly be
complete without Digger, who is doubtless better known, and has a wider circle of pals, on campus, than either of us! Digger, as you can see, is attracted, good Victorianist that he is, to William Morris tapestry. But his real addiction is chasing squirrels - - impossible to show here in the present state of multi-media internet facilities - - and one of his many functions is to make life on the Vassar campus just a little more home-y for many students.
Another "member" of the family for many years was a 1953 R Type Bentley, but, alas, with age more prosaic forms of transport, like the Honda Accord or our present Subaru Legacy GT wagon, entered our lives. But cars with personalities and flair, just like people, leave their mark, and so we have the fondest memories of the assorted Minis, the Sunbeam Alpine, and the P1800 we used to own.
Of course we both love most things Victorians and although we are not collectors we especially appreciate Victorian ironstone and china, and hope to add to our few Victorian and Edwardian tiles.
It seems that one traditional way to end a Home Page is to give just a few of your favourite web sites. So here are some of ours (for lighter moments):-
There are also a number of interesting History web sites. In this regard British historians perhaps lag behind the American, but for splendid Victorian site see:
